Bangkok’s Commuting Habits

The number of people commuting on a daily basis across the globe is vast. Every worker has to commute to their place of work whether this is a short commute within the city’s boundaries or travelling in from another state or province.  Since Bangkok is Thailand’s business hub with many industries and services being firmly rooted here from banking headquarters, insurance firms, international school and hospitals to impressive retail offerings, hordes of people flock to the city center for work or to use these services.

What makes Bangkok such an exciting place to live is the life on the streets. From the vendors selling food by the side of the road to eat on the go to pop up restaurants catering for the office crowd at lunchtimes. There is sheer diversity in the capital and this applies even to how to get around the city too.

As Thailand is experiencing a growing middle class, there are increasing numbers of cars on the roads. This has helped amplify Bangkok’s congestion problem and means sitting in gridlock during peak periods is not uncommon. For many foreigners buying a car is not an option if they are not familiar with driving in the country, are not prepared to be stuck in traffic or do not have the capital in place to buy a car.

Whilst taxis appear to be a convenient means to get around the city particularly especially because to their affordability, due to the unreliability of the traffic and volume of other vehicles on the road, it is certainly not the most efficient mode of transport. Additionally, for foreigners a certain level of Thai language is needed to state where you need to go and give directions if required.

Motorbike taxis operate around the city and are often used by residents commuting from their local BTS Skytrain or MRT station to home as there are many condominiums that are located far from these vital transport lifelines. As expected, this is not the most comfortable nor safest option so naturally there is a huge appeal to living as close to the BTS Skytrain and MRT networks as possible.

Both of this mass transit networks offer a reliable and efficient form of commuting for Bangkok. Fully air conditioned for the ultimate in comfort, they operate from around 5:30 am until approximately midnight to keep the city moving. The BTS above the ground and the MRT beneath are unaffected by external factors such as the weather that can bring the streets to a standstill in rainy season. Plus even during rush hours it is possible to get around quickly without having to worry about the traffic on the roads.
